About

The Author

a geek trapped in the kitchen is written by Jason Kemp, a software developer living in Ottawa, Ontario with his wife and child.

He also writes about technical subjects.

He started getting fancy with cooking when he bought a Weber grill in 2006 and wanted to cook more than burgs and dogs on it. Lots of Food Network, cook books, and family dinners later, he’s slightly more at ease in the kitchen.

He likes bacon and iced tea.

The Site

The site serves two purposes for me: primarily to write about food and cooking, but also to play around with web design, HTML 5, WordPress, and PHP. All pictures are taken by me. All the food is cooked by me.

The site design reflects my design philosophy of letting content speak for itself, with minimal CLICK HERE or SHARE THIS annoyances. I’m not a web designer by trade, but I am fascinated by the design of things, a necessity when developing user interfaces for software. Web design allows one to play around more quickly.

The theme is written completely by me. This latest incarnation, In The Kitchen 2.0, uses standard HTML and CSS, taking some limited advantage of Firefox and Webkit-based browser-specific extensions. Typography is a particularly easy aspect of design for a programmer with no art skills to play with.

I take advantage of @font-face support to make everyone see the fonts I want the site to have. I used the excellent Font Squirrel to find some free fonts to use. The post body text is rendered in Bergamo Standard, the titles use League Gothic and Lane and the footer section uses Latin Modern Sans.

Greg Barnes graciously allows me to use three of his Vintage Kitchen icons for the site. The Stand Mixer is in the header, the Blender in the footer and the Pie Tin on the 404 page.
